Tameside
Tameside stretches eastward from Manchester to the fringes of the Peak District National Park. Its landscape encompasses urban centres, moorland and the spectacular vistas of Werneth Low. The borough was created in 1974 and includes Ashton-under-Lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale, Mossley and Stalybridge. It takes its name from the River Tame which was the traditional border between Lancashire and Cheshire. Tameside was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and was once a centre for cotton, engineering, coal mining and hatting. Among the famous personalities born in the borough are Sir Geoff Hurst, Mick Hucknall, Kathy Staff, Howard Donald and Ricky Hatton.
Top attractions include: Portland Basin Museum, a family-friendly attraction dedicated to telling the story of the history of Tameside across the past 200 years; the Museum of the Manchester Regiment; Werneth Low Country Park; Park Bridge Heritage Centre; and Ashton Market, one of the oldest and largest markets in the region.
